How Hypnotherapy Works
Clinical hypnotherapy is a structured, professional therapy — not a performance, not a mystery. Here's what actually happens, how the sessions work, and what you can expect from the process.
What Is Clinical Hypnotherapy?
Clinical hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses guided relaxation and focused attention to access the subconscious mind — the part of your mind that holds your habits, automatic reactions, beliefs, and emotional responses. It's where most of the patterns that drive anxiety, pain, phobias, and other difficulties are stored.
Unlike regular talk therapy or counselling, which works mostly at the conscious level, hypnotherapy allows us to work directly with these deeper patterns. This is why it can often produce noticeable shifts faster than other approaches — you're addressing the root, not just the symptoms.
Clinical hypnosis has been used therapeutically for over a century and is recognised by major medical and psychological bodies worldwide. It is not the same as stage hypnosis, which is entertainment. In a clinical setting, you remain fully aware, fully in control, and can stop at any time.
What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session
Every session follows a clear, structured process. Whether it's your first session or your fifth, here's what to expect — step by step.
We Talk First
Every session begins with a conversation. You tell me what's going on — what you're feeling, what's changed since last time, what's on your mind. If it's your first session, we'll spend more time here so I can understand your situation fully. This is also where I explain what we'll do in the session and answer any questions you have. There are no surprises.
Guided Relaxation
I'll guide you into a state of deep relaxation using my voice. This is the hypnosis part — and it's nothing like what you see on TV. You'll be fully aware of where you are and what's happening. Most people describe it as a deeply calm, focused state — like being absorbed in a good book, where everything else gently fades into the background. You can open your eyes and stop at any time.
Working With the Subconscious Mind
Once you're in that relaxed state, we work with the subconscious patterns behind your symptoms. Depending on what you're dealing with, this might involve revisiting a memory that's still affecting you, reframing a belief that's been holding you back, releasing tension your body has been holding, or building new responses to replace old, unhelpful ones. The process is always gentle and at your pace — you stay in control throughout.
Debrief & Self-Practice
After the hypnotherapy part, we talk through what came up during the session. I'll explain what we worked on and give you any self-hypnosis techniques or simple exercises to practise between sessions. These aren't homework — they're tools that help reinforce the work we've done. We'll also plan what to focus on next time.
How many sessions will I need? It depends on what you're working on and how you respond. Some people notice meaningful shifts after 2–3 sessions. Others benefit from a longer engagement, especially for deeper or longer-standing concerns. There's no fixed number — we discuss a realistic plan after your first session, based on your specific situation. You're never locked into a set number of sessions.
Why Online Hypnotherapy Works
All sessions happen online via Zoom or Google Meet. If you're wondering whether online hypnosis can work as well as in-person, the short answer is: yes, it can.
Clinical hypnosis is entirely voice-guided — there's no physical contact involved. This makes it naturally suited for online delivery. You hear the same voice, follow the same process, and reach the same depth of relaxation as you would in a clinic room. Many clients actually prefer online sessions because they can be in their own comfortable space — which often helps them relax more easily.
I've been working with clients online for years, including people across India and internationally. The quality of the therapeutic work is the same. The only difference is convenience — no travel, no waiting rooms, and you can schedule sessions around your life.
Whether you're in Delhi, NCR, or anywhere else — all you need is a quiet room and a stable internet connection.
Before Your Session
- Find a quiet, private room where you won't be disturbed
- Use a comfortable chair or sofa — you'll be sitting, not lying down
- Stable internet connection with Zoom or Google Meet installed
- Earphones or headphones for the best audio quality
- Have some water nearby — take it at your own pace
- Silence your phone and close other tabs or apps
Hypnotherapy: Myths vs Reality
Most of what people "know" about hypnosis comes from movies and TV. Here's what's actually true — and what isn't.
"I'll Lose Control"
You remain fully aware and in control at all times. You can open your eyes, speak, or stop the session whenever you want. Hypnotherapy is collaborative — nothing happens without your consent. You cannot be made to say or do anything against your will.
"It's Like Stage Hypnosis"
Stage hypnosis is entertainment. Clinical hypnotherapy is a structured therapy used by trained professionals to address real conditions. The two share a name, but very little else. Nobody is going to make you cluck like a chicken.
"Only Certain People Can Be Hypnotized"
Most people can enter a hypnotic state — it's a natural ability, not a special skill. You've already experienced it: that absorbed feeling when you're lost in thought or deeply focused on something. A skilled hypnotherapist adjusts the approach to work with your individual style.
"It's a Quick Fix or Magic Trick"
Hypnotherapy is therapy — structured, professional, and evidence-based. Some people experience significant shifts quickly, while others need more time. It depends on what you're working on and how long the issue has been present. There are no guarantees, but the approach is well-established and widely used.
"You'll Be Asleep or Unconscious"
Hypnosis is not sleep. You'll be in a deeply relaxed but fully aware state. Most people remember everything that happens during the session. It's closer to a very focused daydream than anything resembling unconsciousness.
"Online Hypnosis Can't Work"
Clinical hypnosis is voice-guided — there is no physical contact. This makes it naturally suited for online delivery. The therapeutic quality is the same whether you're in a clinic or your own living room. Many clients actually find it easier to relax at home.
